ABOUT US

St. Bakhita House of Hope is community-based project located in the slums of Langas, Eldoret – Kenya. Our main focus is to power-up women and girls through vocational training, life skills and enterprise development. Concurrently, we create an inclusive platform for our women/girls from diverse ethnic, social and economically humble backgrounds to engage and inspire themselves to take active roles in community peacebuilding and sustainable development. Ultimately, we aim to become a center where hopes, aspirations and dreams of women and girls are housed, flourished and promoted.

OUR VISION

We envision a society where women/girls are economically self-sustained and socially well-engaged

OUR MISSION

To build the capacity of women/girls in vocational skills, enterprise development as well as community peacebuilding

Our history

St. Bakhita was first established in 2008 as a rescue centre to support vulnerable girls affected by the 2008 post-electoral violence. First known as St. Bakhita Rescue Centre, our original goal was to simply serve as a home for the affected girls by providing a roof to shelter them from the street.

Over time, we redefined our goal to empower the girls with skills that will make them self-sufficient when they leave our home. With a modest beginning, we began providing a 2-year vocational training courses for girls between 15-17 years. As of August 2018, over 140 girls had been trained in three main vocational skills – dressmaking, hairdressing and catering.

After 10 years, we decided to chart new frontiers to achieve greater impact. In September 2018, we merged with our sister organization that has been providing similar training for women from humble background since 2013. We also widened our net of beneficiaries to include women with/affected by disabilities.  In line with our growth strategy, we have built new partnerships and strengthened old ones to allow us to have more market-streamlined training and comprehensively-structured life skill development
